As the number of armed mass casualty events goes up this year the responsibility to be prepared to meet violence everywhere we go has never been heavier. We have seen a couple armed good guys actually intervein(including this guy who put in work with a bolt gun), but unfortunately the vast majority of these events go unchallenged.
With the underlying cause(severe mental health disorders) being exacerbated over the last year and a half due to over prescription of psychotropic drugs, extensive media gaslighting, forced isolation, and utter financial uncertainty for a huge percentage of the population, it seems it will only get worse. I sincerely hope I’m wrong, because I can’t stand to see these tragedies happen in our own back yards. It will take a lot of work to really address these issues, and because the root is not politically expedient, the narrative surrounding the demonization of guns will always be front and center.
That’s another topic for another day, I want to focus on what we can do right now.
I recently took a family trip to Texas, and while there we visited multiple placed that happened to be “gun free” zones, including the local Zoo. Over the span of 6 hours I saw a grand total of three zoo security guards. All of them over weight, all of them older than 50, and only one was carrying a firearm. I guess they don’t expect to ever use force because of the strongly worded signs they have posted.
I could go on a tirade about the ineffectiveness of gun free zones, citing that the majority if not all media highlighted armed mass casualty events happen in those zones, but that’s beside the point.
The fact is it would be downright negligent of me to allow my families security to be reliant on the rent-a-cop brigade the zoo pays $11.00 an hour to throw out the middle aged drunk guy that taunted the lions one too many times.
So I chose to break the law and carry.
Your average police officer isn’t trained much more than the zoo’s security team, and there isn’t anybody more motivated or qualified to protect your family than you.
Period.
Culturally we have slowly outsourced more and more of the responsibility of our personal security to people who frankly aren’t qualified, don’t care, and aren’t required to protect us.
The trend is changing though, with staggering amounts of new gun owners over the last year and a half, the façade of societal security is crumbling.
This realization may seem negative, but there is immense freedom in taking on the responsibility to protect your circle, and the capability to use violence if necessary. Don’t let immoral laws deter you from being the asset your community needs.
Embrace the freedom. Be that asset.
